As autumn descends upon the Great Plains of North America, the largest private land conservation project in the country is ringing in an inspirational milestone. The resident herd of relatively free-roaming bison has now surpassed four digits for the first time since the organization’s founding more than 20 years ago.

Building the Ultimate American Prairie Reserve

The conservation initiative is dedicated to stitching together the largest contiguously wild stretch of North American prairie in the country for the purpose of ecological restoration and public recreation. By combining grasslands, water features, ranchland, rolling hills, and woodlands, the reserve has successfully accumulated over 603,000 acres of both deeded and leased public lands. Ultimately, the project aims to protect and rewild 3.2 million acres—an ambitious vision driven by passionate citizens.

Over two decades of steady expansion have turned the initiative into a massive sanctuary. If officially declared a national park, the expansive protected area would easily rank among the nation’s ten largest across the lower 48 states.

Overcoming Hurdles in Wildlife Restoration

While tens of millions of bison once roamed freely across the American landscape, today their numbers hover between 1% and 3.5% of their pre-industrial population. Furthermore, less than 10% of those remaining bison are managed for conservation as a truly wild species. Most existing herds are confined to small, fenced-in enclosures that severely restrict their genetic health, natural behaviors, and vital ecological impact on the grasslands.

Looking Ahead to a Thriving Future

Following a recent positive legal ruling ensuring that conservation efforts can continue on public grazing allotments, the annual autumn calf count officially pushed the herd size to 1,016. Organizers view this as a monumental step forward, with a mid-term goal of reaching a healthy herd of 5,000 animals. Ultimately, the broader vision of establishing a massive 5,000-square-mile sanctuary could one day comfortably support tens of thousands of free-roaming bison, securing a vibrant and resilient future for America's iconic grasslands.
