A monumental milestone in renewable energy has been achieved in eastern Germany, where the world's tallest wind turbine has officially reached its full height. Located in Schipkau, the pilot turbine stands an astounding 365 meters (1,197 feet) from base to blade tip. This towering engineering feat now proudly holds the title of Germany's second-tallest structure, sitting just behind the iconic Berlin TV tower, with official commissioning slated for November.

Reaching New Heights for Stronger Winds

As wind energy engineers have long known, higher altitudes offer access to winds that are significantly faster and far more reliable. By tapping into these consistent upper-level air currents, the innovative turbine design is projected to produce roughly twice the electricity of a conventional turbine possessing the exact same rotor diameter over the course of a year.

While the current pilot turbine features a rated capacity of 3.8 megawatts—with future iterations designed to surpass seven megawatts—its soaring rotor hub sits at an impressive 300 meters (984 feet) above the ground. Constructing a structure of this magnitude required groundbreaking engineering. Because deploying a traditional crane to reach nearly 1,200 feet was entirely impractical, the development team utilized an ingenious telescoping tower. A specialized lifting system successfully raised an inner tower directly through a surrounding lattice structure before locking it securely into place at full extension.

"365 meters – this is an overwhelming moment for our entire team," shared the project's founder and CEO. "What was long a challenging idea and then an equally challenging construction project now stands as a globally unique facility in Schipkau."

Innovating the Future of Wind Energy

Rather than replacing existing wind farms, developers envision a complementary approach that maximizes the potential of land already dedicated to clean energy. Key takeaways from this pioneering project include:

Although the Schipkau turbine is currently a pilot project and yield projections await final validation during active operation, discussions regarding commercialization and series production are already underway with major wind energy partners. This breathtaking achievement marks a promising leap forward in our global transition toward smarter, highly efficient renewable power solutions.
