Documentary shorts are frequently dominated by narratives of tragedy and hardship, but a refreshing new movement is shining a light on stories rooted in joy, hope, and human connection. Award-eligible films are capturing these uplifting perspectives, offering audiences a wonderful counterweight to traditional media.

When filmmaker Ora DeKornfeld realized her grandfather was approaching his 99th birthday, she knew it was now or never. For years, he had steadfastly refused to record his life story. Formal, private, and fiercely protective of his past, he never spoke about the life he left behind in Hungary. Recognizing that a direct approach wouldn't work, DeKornfeld decided to get creative.

Unlocking Memories With a Custom Jigsaw Puzzle

Her creative solution blossomed into The Grandfather Puzzle. Her grandfather had left behind a castle, a baronial title, and a European life shrouded in silence. Because he loved jigsaw puzzles, DeKornfeld traveled to the very castle where he grew up, photographed it, and turned the image into a custom puzzle. She then brought it home to Baltimore, hoping the tactile experience might gently break down the decades of silence between them.

The journey itself was filled with unexpected moments. Upon arrival, the local townspeople warmly welcomed her with gifts and speeches, treating her like a returning baroness in a scene that was equal parts absurd, overwhelming, and humorous. Yet, the deeper history—specifically why her family had fled—remained unspoken.

Finding Peace and No Regrets

Although the puzzle ultimately did not unlock his hidden memories, and her grandfather passed away months after the film premiered without ever watching it, the journey was profoundly transformative. DeKornfeld realized that making the film brought her remarkably close to him in spirit.

“I had to go very far away to feel close to him, which is kind of ironic,” she reflected. “But when he passed away, I realized I had no regrets about our relationship.”

Core Takeaways for Families

DeKornfeld hopes that viewers take away a universal message about bridging emotional distances with loved ones. No matter how guarded someone might be, taking the initiative to understand them brings its own reward.
