Five years ago, an unexpected tragedy struck a Texas highway when 18-year-old Kenli Riney was involved in a severe head-on collision. Her car spun off the road into a ditch and quickly caught fire. In that perilous moment, pure human courage shone through. The Argote family, driving behind her, witnessed the accident and did not hesitate. Mike Argote, along with three other brave bystanders, sprinted directly toward the raging flames to pull Kenli from the burning wreckage.

Despite sustaining burns during the daring rescue, Mike immediately initiated CPR on the roadside. When exhaustion set in, his 14-year-old daughter, Ema, bravely stepped up to continue resuscitation efforts. Though Kenli tragically succumbed to her injuries, the Argote family stayed by her side, gathering around the young woman on the highway to hold a compassionate vigil in prayer.

Connecting Families Through Acts of Courage

For a long time, Kenli’s family had few details about the selfless strangers who spent those final, vital moments with their daughter. Healing began to take shape when Kenli’s uncle stumbled upon a social media post describing the heroic rescue attempt. That discovery led the Riney family straight to the Argote family, opening the door to an extraordinary bond built on compassion, gratitude, and mutual respect. Today, half a decade after the life-altering event, the two families remain deeply conjoined, forever linked by that profound act of bravery.

Turning Loss into Educational Opportunities

Determined to honor their daughter's memory and celebrate the extraordinary selfless spirit shown by strangers, Kenli’s parents, Marjohn and Kevin Riney, founded the Kenli Foundation in Kerrville, Texas—the community where they had moved to support Kenli’s dream of becoming an equine surgeon.

The foundation was born out of a desire to recognize individuals who instinctively run toward danger to help others rather than stepping away. Its core mission is to award college, vocational, and graduate scholarships to students who display exceptional character, heroism, compassion, and leadership within their communities.

Core Impact of the Kenli Foundation

A Growing Movement of Gratitude and Inspiration

What began as a modest family tribute has rapidly expanded into an inspiring educational initiative. In its inaugural year, the foundation evaluated four applications. Today, that impact has grown exponentially, with over 450 applications submitted in a single year. To date, the Kenli Foundation has funded 67 young heroes and distributed $67,000 directly to students entering university, trade programs, and graduate studies.

In a poignant full-circle moment, when Ema Argote graduated high school, the Riney family proudly presented her with a scholarship to support her studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In addition to an annual award for graduates of Tivy High School in memory of Kenli, the foundation established the dedicated Argote Award Scholarship at San Saba High School to permanently honor the courageous family who fought to save their daughter.

Through unwavering devotion and community support, Kenli’s legacy continues to inspire everyday acts of kindness, ensuring that those who run toward the fire to help others are remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
