In a truly historic milestone for the kingdom, King Mohammed VI appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Morocco’s prime minister. The 50-year-old accomplished urban planner and longtime mayor of Marrakesh has broken barriers by becoming the first woman to hold the role in Moroccan history, as well as the third woman to serve as prime minister in the entire Arab world.

“For the first time in our country's history, a woman is taking on the responsibility of leading the government,” El Mansouri shared in a televised address. “This is a source of pride not only for me but for all Moroccan women.”

From Marrakesh City Hall to National Leadership

Born in Marrakesh in 1976, El Mansouri built a robust educational foundation in law, earning a diploma in advanced studies from the University of Montpellier in France and a diploma in Anglo-Saxon business law from New York University. Her impressive career in public service took off in 2009 when she was elected mayor of Marrakesh at just 33 years old, making her the first woman to hold that office. She later returned to lead the Marrakesh municipal council and served multiple terms in the House of Representatives.

Demonstrating exceptional crisis leadership, El Mansouri stepped into the national government in October 2021 as the Minister of National Spatial Planning, Urban Development, Housing, and Urban Policy. In this critical role, she spearheaded housing reform and led the monumental effort to rehouse tens of thousands of citizens displaced by the devastating 2023 Al Haouz earthquake in the High Atlas mountains.

Building Coalitions and Preparing for the 2030 World Cup

El Mansouri's political party secured a leading position in the national elections, paving the way for her new administration. As she builds a collaborative coalition government, her leadership arrives at a pivotal time for the nation. Some core focus areas for her administration include:

A Rising Tide for Women Leaders in the Arab World

El Mansouri proudly follows in the footsteps of remarkable regional predecessors, highlighting a broader cultural and political shift toward gender equality in governance across North Africa and the Middle East. With her extensive background in urban planning and crisis response, she is uniquely equipped to guide Morocco through an exciting era of modernization, economic growth, and international celebration.
